Ruth Harms Calkin

Ruth Harms Calkin

Ruth Harms Calkin is a gracious, gentle woman with deep sensitivity and a caring heart. She grew up in a minister’s family and is quick to say she never minded the title “preacher’s kid.” “Frankly, I loved our old-fashioned parsonages with their oversized rooms, heavy sliding doors, and screened-in porches. Almost every Sunday my parents entertained guests: visiting missionaries, young married couples, new Christians. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the ongoing conversations around the large oak table.”

When she was very young, Ruth’s father encouraged her to keep a journal. “Listen to God’s secrets,” he counseled, “and record what you think God may be whispering.” This was a tremendous challenge to a little girl who wanted with all her heart to hear God…a little girl who loved secrets!

Keeping a journal became a revolutionary experience for Ruth. It was, in fact, the beginning of her published books. Her incomparable prayer poems give voice for every heart in the search for God’s way, God’s peace. Ruth shares her own hard-earned, authentic experiences with her Lord. In thoughts tinged with wonder, joy, humanness, failure, introspection, humor and celebrations, she speaks for all of us in our groping and leaning about what it means to be his.

Ruth’s first book, Tell Me Again Lord, I Forget was published in 1986. Other book titles are Lord, You Love to Say Yes; Lord, I Keep Running Back to You; Lord, Could You Hurry a Little?, Lord, it Keeps Happening and Happening; Lord, Don’t You Love Me Anymore? and Lord, I Just Keep Running in Circles. These books are published by Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois.

Her latest book, Precious Thoughts from the Heart, is published by Inspiration Press, New York.

Ruth also authored several daily calendars. Her 1996 calendar, published by Tyndale House, is entitled A Simple Gift: Gentle Reflections of God’s Love.

Ruth’s God-given gifts of wisdom and discernment, coupled with her astute thinking and communication skills, cause her to be a much sought-after speaker across the United States. In her uniquely challenging and inspirational way, she speaks to church women’s organizations at banquets, luncheons, and retreats.

Ruth received her education at Linfield College, McMinnville, Oregon, and the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.

Her husband, Rollin, served for over 30 years on the staff of First Baptist Church in Pomona, California, as Minister of Christian Education and Minister of Music. Now retired, he is a continual source of encouragement and support to his wife, Ruth. He happily proclaims, “We are now and always will be committed to God and to each other.”
